Acting President of Sri Lanka announces a state of emergency

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the country of Sri Lanka’s acting president, has imposed a state of emergency that would last through Monday.

According to a special gazette notice, Wickremesinghe proclaimed the emergency in the interests of public safety, the maintenance of public order, and the preservation of supplies and services necessary to communal life.

Following the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who went to Singapore via the Maldives, amid a serious economic crisis in the South Asian nation, the parliament of Sri Lanka is set to pick a new president on July 20. On Tuesday, names will be called for the presidential race.
