Bangladesh becomes WFP executive board president for 2022

Bangladesh has been overwhelmingly elected as the president of the Rome-based World Food Programme’s (WFP) 36-member Executive Board for the year 2022.

Md Shameem Ahsan, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to the FAO, IFAD, and WFP, was elected President by acclamation of all Member States on Monday, according to a foreign ministry press statement.

Bangladesh will lead the Board in supporting the World Food Programme’s efforts to provide life-saving assistance in humanitarian emergencies, particularly in conflict-affected countries and during the current COVID-19 pandemic, which is lingering longer than planned.

Ambassador Ahsan emphasized in his opening remarks that the WFP plays a critical role in ensuring food security for many of the world’s most vulnerable people.

“As members of the Executive Board, we have the responsibility to provide advise and assistance to the World Food Programme in carrying out its mandate,” he continued.
