Sydney reopens after months of COVID lockdown

After nearly four months of lockdown, Sydney’s cafés, gyms, and restaurants have reopened their doors to fully vaccinated customers, as new infections decline and vaccination coverage rises.

Sydney’s bars, restaurants, and other businesses reopened for the first time in over 100 days on Monday, after the city’s COVID vaccination rate surpassed 70%.

According to television videos and social media photographs, some pubs and restaurants in the city opened at 12:01 a.m. (1301 GMT), and citizens gathered to celebrate.

After COVID cases connected to the delta variant began to rise around mid-June this year, authorities implemented several lockdowns and tightened restrictions. Sydney is Australia’s largest metropolis, with a population of five million people.
