24 million USD urgently needed for acute humanitarian needs in Afghanistan

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched an urgent appeal for USD 24 million to help meet the country’s growing humanitarian needs, which include hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons in the last two months.

IOM Afghanistan Chief of Mission Stuart Simpson said, “We are working to assemble a scaled-up response to the most immediate, life-saving requirements.”

“Wherever practicable, our humanitarian work will continue, subject to access and security. Large-scale displacement caused by violence and drought, which has been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, is increasing poverty and food insecurity in the country, resulting in significant humanitarian and protection needs.”

Shelter and non-food relief, WASH, health, protection, multi-sectoral humanitarian support in border communities, emergency livelihoods, and social cohesion are among the priorities, according to Simpson.

In Afghanistan, there are around 5.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs), with more than 550,000 newly displaced in 2021, over half of them have abandoned their homes since July.
