POTUS Biden on his first foreign tour

Joe Biden is making his first foreign trip since taking over the White House as the 46th president of the United States. He left Washington on Wednesday to attend the G7 summit in the United Kingdom.

Biden’s eight-day visit includes talks with President Vladimir Putin to renew the fragile trans-Atlantic relationship left by his predecessor, Donald Trump, and to repair relations with Russia.

Donald Trump’s imposition of trade tariffs, relations with key allies frustrated by the United States’ withdrawal from various international agreements, have come as a test of where Democrat President Joe Biden is heading and whether he can reform.

The highlight of the visit is Joe Biden’s June 16 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He will be able to tell Putin directly about US concerns over cyberattacks from Russia, Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine and other issues.

On the first day of the eight-day trip, Biden will attend the G7 conference in the seaside village of St. Eves in Cornwall, UK. Vaccine diplomacy, trade, climate change and infrastructure initiatives in the developing world are expected to be important issues. The visit could also pave the way for tackling China’s growing dominance around the world.

Joe Biden may face more global pressure on the vaccine this week, despite the United States pledging a dose of 20 million coronavirus vaccines worldwide last week.
