Extensive corona infection on Everest

Acute coronavirus infection has spread in the Himalayas. The virus has already been detected in at least 100 mountaineers and their associates.

Austrian mountaineering guide Lucas Fartenbach canceled his mountaineering last week for fear of coronavirus, the news agency AP reported. But even then at least six of his team have been infected with the virus.

Lucas said at least 100 people at the base camp were affected by the corona. This number may be more than 200 people. Many more have been infected there, he said.

For so long, Nepali authorities have been denying Corona’s presence on Everest. But on April 15, at the base camp of Everest (at an altitude of more than 18,600 feet), two climbers showed signs of corona and were evacuated by helicopter. The corona of one of them was later identified.

Incidentally, after the spread of corona in Nepal, the country’s government-imposed restrictions on climbing Everest on March 24 last year, including the border closure. Mountaineering restrictions were lifted in March this year.

According to the Immigration Department of Nepal, about 15,000 Everest-centric travelers have reached Nepal from March to mid-April this year. Of these, 407 have been allowed to climb Everest by mid-May.
