Google News Initiative (GNI) will be hosting free University Verification Workshops from May 24 to June 9, 2021, for students, journalists, and fact-checkers.

Google news initiative (GNI) is a Google program that aims to help journalism to thrive in the digital age by strengthening and elevating quality journalism and empowering news organizations to leverage technology for newsroom innovation.

The University Verification Workshops will focus on verification principles including the misinformation landscape, geo-location, examining sources, and fact-checking ethics.

GNI is now running free verification workshops in 7 languages (English, Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Thai).

The workshops, targeting university students, journalists, and fact-checkers, are part of the APAC Trusted Media Summit’s ongoing programming.

The six workshops will cover basic verification skills including the misinformation landscape, geo-location, examining sources, and fact-checking ethics.

These workshops will be run jointly with google-partners across Asia, working together hand-in-hand to educate future journalists and fact-checkers on the importance of verifying content before publishing.
Certified GNI trainer and open-source investigation specialist Eoghan Sweeney prepared the workshop materials.

Eoghan Sweeney is a Berlin-based digital media consultant who has helped establish and develop verification and fact-checking operations for media companies including Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post and Germany’s Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
