Singapore rejects Delhi CM’s comment on Covid Singapore variant

Singapore has categorically rejected Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s claims that a new variant of coronavirus, which is “proved to be extremely dangerous” for children, was detected in Singapore, reports BSS.

“There is no truth whatsoever in the assertions…There is no Singapore variant. The strain that is prevalent in many of the COVID-19 cases in recent weeks is B.1.617.2 variant, which is originated in India,” the Singapore health ministry said in a statement late yesterday.

The statement came following Delhi Chief Minister’s comment on social media on the “new variant” when he also requested India’s central government to suspend air services to and from Singapore to prevent the spread of the variant to save children.

Kejriwal’s tweet is seemed to have irked the authorities prompting Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishan to take to social media rejecting the Delhi CM’s comment. “Politicians should stick on facts! There is no Singapore variant”, he tweeted.

Singapore foreign ministry also issued a statement as it “regrets the unfounded assertions” made by Kejriwal that a variant of COVID-19 found in Singapore was particularly harmful to children and could cause the third wave of infections in India.
