US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said that the US presence in Afghanistan will continue even after the withdrawal of troops.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made the remarks in an interview with CBS on Sunday (May 2nd).
“We’ve been in the war in Afghanistan for 20 years and sometimes we forget why we went there first,” he said. “We launched a military operation in Afghanistan to oust those involved in the 9/11 attacks. We have been working there for the last 20 years. Now that troops are returning from Afghanistan, it does not mean that we are leaving Afghanistan. We will not leave Afghanistan. The United States will continue to provide economic and humanitarian assistance for the development of Afghanistan,” he added.
“We are ready to look at any situation other than the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan,” Blinken said. If the Taliban regains power, we must be ready for it.
Meanwhile, the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan began on Saturday (May 1). President Joe Biden announced on April 14 that all US troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan by September 11.
