No PEC exams this year in Bangladesh

Prime Minister approves the ministry proposal submitted in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and flood around the country.

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has stated the Primary Education Completion (PEC) examination will not be held this year. The primary and mass education ministry carried a letter to the prime minister on Aug 19 with a recommendation that the PEC exams be held individually in schools rather than centrally.

“The prime minister has approved the suspension of primary education completion and equivalent Ebtediya completion examinations considering the overall coronavirus situation in the country,” stated Zakir Hossain, state minister for primary and mass education.

No primary students will gain scholarships this year as PEC and equal exams will not be held centrally due to the coronavirus epidemic, Hossain announced.

Around 82,500 students were nominated in 2019 for the government allowance over their results in PEC exams. Nearly three million students were expected to attend this year’s PEC exams.

In the plan sent to the PM, the ministry stated a total of 71 working days were being freezed from March 18 to August 31 due to holidays in educational institutions. As a result, 406 subject-based lessons of the students are unfinished.

From January 1 to March 17, only 30-35 % of the syllabus has been finished. It takes at least 50 working days to finish the rest of the syllabus, according to the proposal.

Although it is possible to conduct academic activities from November to December, 50 working days will not be available, the letter mentioned.

The National Academy for Primary Education, or NAPE, was told to prepare three alternative lessons for schools in September, October, and November.
