Bangladesh wants to start migrating Rohingyas to Bhasan Char

The government has invested heavily in infrastructure development to accommodate 1 lakh Rohingyas in Bhasan Char. After the monsoon season, Bangladesh wants to start relocating Rohingyas to Bhasan Char Island under the “Go and Visit” program.

Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen said, “We will arrange a visit and inspection visit (program) soon. We expect the Rohingya to start relocating early after the monsoon.”

He added that 306 Rohingyas who were recently rescued from the Bay of Bengal have been given shelter in Bhasan Char and are doing well there.

The foreign secretary said UN teams could also visit and the government would arrange for more visits for human rights activists and members of the media.

Highlighting the lack of a conducive environment in Myanmar and two failed repatriation efforts, Momen said the Rohingya are not yet comfortable with the Rakhine environment.

He called on other countries to change the environment in Rakhine State and persuade Myanmar to implement the repatriation of Rohingya.
