WHO will reassessed the Covid-19 emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) says a key committee will meet later this week to discuss the Emergency of Covid-19. The WHO declared a state of emergency six months ago.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Monday that the agency’s emergency committee would meet to re-evaluate the state of emergency declared over the outbreak.

Six months ago, the WHO declared a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’. The declaration called for the utmost caution under international health rules. And this announcement must be re-evaluated every six months.

The WHO made only five such announcements before Covid-19 and after the changes to international health rules in 2006. One time for swine flu, polio, JICA, and Twice for Ebola.

Of these, the current epidemic is easily the most deadly, Tedders said. “When I declared the ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ on January 30, the number of people infected with corona outside China was less than 100 and there were no deaths,” he said.

But since then, the number of corona cases in the world has exceeded 16 million and so far 650,000 people have died.
