UK aid supports use of drone technology in Ghana’s coronavirus fight

Partnership within UK Aid and Gavi: the Vaccine Alliance is helping the Ghanaian government use zipline drones to collect coronavirus test samples from across the country.

Collectively, the UK government and Gavi alongside the Gates Foundation and delivery company UPS Foundation have funded Zipline’s drone stations.

This world-leading technology has increased Ghana’s ability to provide vaccines for the deadly diseases such as yellow fever and polio, and to collect kits for coronavirus testing, especially in rural areas where access by road has increased.

Often in hard-to-reach areas, these stations allow health authorities to safely handle test samples and deliver these to one of Ghana’s testing laboratories. The stations are also utilized to load the drones with medical supplies to make sure they reach those most in need, as well as health workers supporting communities in rural areas in small community health centers.
