Bangladesh elected as UNWTO vice-president

Bangladesh has been elected the vice-president of the General Assembly of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), reports BSS.

Bangladesh has also been elected a member of the UNWTO Credential Committee, according to an official press release.

The elections were held in the 57th conference of the WTO Commission for South Asia in the Bhutanese capital of Thimphu on June 3-6, the release said.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh Md Mahbub Ali presided over the conference.

Bangladesh has been elected the vice-president of the UNWTO General Assembly for one year by securing votes of all members of the WTO Commission for South Asia, the release said, adding that Iran contested the elections against Bangladesh.

The release further said Bangladesh has been elected a member of the UNWTO Credential Committee unanimously.

With the victory, Bangladesh will perform the responsibility of the vice-president in the 23rd session of the UNWTO to be held in Russian Federation this year.

Bangladesh is now performing as the chairman of the UNWTO Commission for South Asia.

A four-member Bangladesh delegation led by the state minister for civil aviation and tourism went to Bhutan on June 2 to join the 57th conference of the WTO Commission for South Asia.
