Blockade on Airport Road ends, traffic resumes

After six hours of blockade, law enforcers have managed to convince agitating students to step aside and resume traffic on the busy Airport Road.

The students, roaring for justice over yesterday’s death of twoof their friends, withdrew around 4:15pm and smooth passage of traffic followed afterwards.

Since morning, thousands of students took position on the expressway, crippling the north-bound transportation system and blocking even train communication.

Students from Tejgaon Government Science College, BAF Shaheen College, Bhashantek Government College, Kurmitola High School joined the agitation today.

Several dozens of buses were vandalisedat Shewra and Koratoli areas. Dhaka Cantonment Railway Station was besieged for two hours starting from 1:30pm.

Yesterday, two students of the Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were run over by an unruly bus on Airport Road – in yet another glaring example of Dhaka’s unruly transport sector. At least nine others were injured after being hit or run over.

Aggrieved school students went on rampage yesterday, vandalising whatever buses they found before them. The agitation carried on for the whole day today.

The intense agitation has pressured the government much; leading to the arrests of two bus drivers and two helpers today, who they said were involved with the reckless driving.
