No army deployment in Bangladesh local govt elections

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday said army will not be deployed in local government elections, including in Gazipur and Khulna city corporation polls scheduled to be held on May 15, reports BSS.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told a press briefing after a meeting with officials of law enforcement agencies at Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the city.

EC Commissioners Mahbub Talukdar, Md Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kobita Khanom and Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, among others, were present at the meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Khan Md Nurul Huda in the chair.

Helal Uddin hoped that Gazipur and Khulna city corporation polls will be held in a free, fair and neutral manner. “We will deploy members of RAB, BGB and other law enforcement agencies to ensure peaceful atmosphere during two city corporation polls,” he added.
