Abdullah Hel Baki secures silver at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Abdullah Hel Baki has secured Bangladesh’s first medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as he bagged the silver medal in his 10m Air Rifle event in Gold Coast, Australia today.

Baki scored 244.7 on at the Belmont Shooting Centre, just 0.4 less than Australian Dane Sampson who won gold after setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 245.0, while India’s Ravi Kumar bagged bronze scoring 224.1.

Earlier Baki was placed sixth in the qualifying round to earn a spot in the final. Baki had also achieved silver medal in 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

In his immediate reaction Baki, after hanging silver medal on his neck, said: “I knew everyone looked at me (hope) .. I was thinking of gold medal rather I concentrated to trying to win a medal for the country which I achieved … I feel great and if I would have concentrate a little more, I could have got the gold medal.”

Baki said he focused to take part in the on 50m air rifles event though he was also mentally prepared to participate in the 10m air rifles event as he was given a hint that could have happened in the games so he took some preparation and achieved the success finally.

Bangladesh Shooting Federation secretary general Intekhabul Hamid, who was also delighted of Baki’s success, said they expect more medals in shooting.

He said shooter Shakil Ahmed will take part in the 10m pistol event tomorrow (Monday) while and also compete in the 50m pistol event on April 11.
