President of Bangladesh M Abdul Hamid today appointed Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, as the 22nd chief justice of Bangladesh, reports BSS.
“The oath-taking ceremony of the new chief justice will be held at Bangabhaban at 7 pm tomorrow (Saturday),” President’s Press Secretary Mohammad Joynal Abedin said here this afternoon. The President cleared his appointment today, he added.
The post of the chief justice fell vacant after chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned on November 10 last year following his leave on health grounds in October.
Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, the most senior judge of the Appellate Division, has been performing functions as the CJ from October 3 last year.
Hon`ble Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain was born on December 31, 1954. He is the son of Syed Mustafa Ali and Begum Kawsar Jahan.
Obtained B.Sc., LL.B. and completed six months long “Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course” from the School of Oriental African Studies and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, both part of London University.
Enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court and the High Court Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court in the year 1981 and 1983 respectively. Acted as Deputy Attorney General from December, 1999 till elevation to the Bench. Elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court Division on 22.02.2001 and Judge of the High Court Division on 22.02.2003. Elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on 23.02.2011.
