Cyclone Mora hits Bangladesh coast

Several houses have been damaged as the cyclonic storm Mora crossed Cox’s Bazar. The severe cyclonic storm crossed the coastal district around 8:15am on Tuesday.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been moved to safety in coastal districts as the Met Office has upgraded the cyclone warning to Great Danger No. 10, the highest level of warning. The disaster management ministry earlier said it was moving to safety more than 2.5 million people in 10 coastal districts which were most vulnerable to the tropical storm. About 18 million people live in 19 coastal districts, with 10 of them at high-risk areas.

Meteorologist of Cox’s Bazar Met office AKM Nazmul Haque sayed, “Wind speed is estimated at 130kmph in Saint Martin and 150kmph Cox’s Bazar port.

Mora was centred at around 385km south of Chittagong port and 305km south of Cox’s Bazar port around 7pm on Monday, said a report published on the website of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is now in Austria, is continuously communicating and getting updates from the officials in Dhaka about the latest situation of the cyclone Mora.

She is also giving necessary instructions to the officials involved in tackling the tropical storm, the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told the media.
