New community and environmentally-based approaches tested in the state of Yucatan in Mexico are helping to reduce vector-borne disease transmission. Designed around Chagas disease and dengue, they are also useful to prevent Zika and chikungunya transmission. The results come from research that partners communities and health services to develop and implement environmentally sound methods to reduce the transmission of dengue and Chagas disease.
The work is being carried out in seven Latin American countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Uruguay. The project has been implemented by TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, in partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Centre.
