The Union expands community-based MDR-TB care through Global Fund grant

News Hour:

The Community-Based Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) Care project, implemented through The Union Office in Myanmar, has been extended to ten additional areas, bringing its total reach to 33 townships across Myanmar, through a grant from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Through this programme, The Union partners with healthcare workers, nurses and community volunteers to establish an extensive network of people equipped to provide quality MDR-TB care and services. Support to MDR-TB patients includes community mobilisation through trained volunteers, treatment delivery and adherence assistance, support groups and therapy sessions for patients and their families and support for the clinical management of TB.

Myanmar has one of the highest rates of TB prevalence in Asia and an estimated 9,000 new cases of MDR-TB annually. The Community-Based MDR-TB Care Programme is working to directly combat those challenges through grants from the Global Fund and the Three Millennium Development Goal Fund.
